MBABANE – Manzini Sea Birds have quietly emerged as unexpected contenders in Eswatini’s intensifying Confederation of African Football (CAF) inter-club competition race.
While Nsingizini Hotspurs basked in the glory of lifting their maiden Ingwenyama Cup before King Mswati III and Her Majesty the Indlovukazi, another intriguing battle quietly surfaced in the background, which is the race for a possible CAF Confederation Cup berth.
The Shiselweni outfit edged Green Mamba 1-0 after extra time on Sunday, pocketing E1.45 million and securing qualification for the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup. Yet, the bigger picture could still dramatically reshape the continental landscape for local clubs.
With only three MTN Premier League matches remaining, Nsingizini sit firmly atop the standings on 58 points, seven ahead of second-placed Manzini Sea Birds.
Should Insingizi Yezulu complete a league and cup double, CAF regulations could hand Sea Birds an unexpected route into African football, if they maintain their current position. They are currently second and are forced to look over their shoulders

Traditionally, cup runners-up inherited the continental place whenever a team completed the domestic double. However, CAF regulations have since shifted the criteria to league merit, effectively placing Sea Birds in pole position, should Nsingizini clinch the title.
Qualification, however, remains subject to strict club licensing requirements. Clubs must possess functional women’s teams, active youth development structures for Under-20 and Under-17 sides, while also proving they have no outstanding debts owed to players, creditors or tax authorities. Nsingizini Head Coach Mandla Qhogi appeared fully aware of the bigger prize after the final, openly declaring his desire to return to the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League. His remarks further fuelled speculation that the Confederation Cup place could eventually fall to Sea Birds. Izinyoni Zolwandle Public Relations Officer (PRO) Thamie Cebe said the club would welcome the opportunity, should it arise.
