THE MAJESTIC CHAMPIONS

My dearest readers ... “Ngiyo Ngiyo Ye-Mabhakaniya” screamed the Times of Swaziland headline in yesterday’s edition and it nicely captured the amazing triumph by the modest, aesthetically-playing football Moneni Buccaneers.

In winning the SwaziBank Cup final for the first time in its 12 editions, Pirates not only rewrote history books but lost their ‘virginity’ in the country’s most loved knockout tournament, which year after year, continues to grow in leaps and bounds.

Losing their ‘virginity’ was no fumbling, sweaty affair – it was a cool, elegant quickie that ended with a last ten minutes of sexy football, where their opponents, Wanderers, chased shadows as every Pirates player who touched the ball tried a trick or two.  It sent the overjoyed Pirates fans on the far Southern stands into ecstasy as many who have followed this great club were taken on a journey down memory lane when the Moneni Buccaneers thrilled the soul with their diski nine.

The halcyon days of goalkeeper Christopher ‘Tototo’ Khoza, master midfielder Mandla ‘Toy Toy’ Manzini, the dearly departed Dumisa ‘Dodge’ Mahlalela, Pat Ntuli, Sylvester Thwala, Justice ‘Ma-Fashion’ Manyatsi, Thulani ‘Mau Mau’ Dlamini, Boy Boy ‘Best’ Nyembe, Sanele ‘Cyclone’ Gina, Osborne ‘Ozila’ Nzima, Ntozakhe Nxumalo, Johannes ‘Disco’ Lukhele, the Maya brothers, Thulani and Sibusiso.

This time, they entertained their way to glory – in sheer majestic fashion. His Majesty King Mswati III wore a wall-to-wall smile as he watched football being played the way it’s supposed to be played by the ‘Buccaneers’, who treated the 12 000 football souls worshipping on the altar of football to Tiki Taka football made famous by that football royalty from Spain – Barcelona.
