MANZINI – Over 650 job opportunities will be available to emaSwati as earthworks have started at the Old Trade Fair Grounds where the Manzini Mall is being constructed.

The first phase towards the construction of the Manzini Mall started yesterday and it was witnessed by the Minister of Commerce, Industry and Trade, Manqoba Khumalo. The minister said the beginning of the earthworks at the site was a conduit to the First World status. He said the mall would change the face of Manzini and the country as well. Khumalo said the construction of the mall would bring a variety of employment opportunities at its various stages of construction.  It is worth noting that unemployment is currently at 35.4 per cent as per the findings of the Integrated Labour Force Survey 2023, which was officially released by the Minister of Labour and Social Security, Phila Buthelezi. The unemployment rate has also increased by 2.1 per cent from 33.3 per cent while on the other hand, the national unemployment rate among the youth stands at 56.0 per cent.

Initial

Meanwhile, Khumalo’s assertions were supported by Nthoese Development Manager Antonio Sousa, who said in the initial stages of the construction, between 650 and 750 emaSwati would be employed. Sousa said these figures excluded the number of casual workers who would be recruited, depending on the need on the ground at the various stages. He envisaged that as the project continued, more people would be recruited. Sousa said the economic impact of the project would be huge, as its tenants would also recruit more people and as such, increase the circulation of money in the country. “The projected money for the project is E2 billion but it can go as high as E5 bi”llion. This is a huge project and we are excited about it,” he said.

Envisaged

The mall is envisaged to have over 50 tenants, which include banking institutions, eateries, clothing shops, supermarkets and jewellery shops, among many. It is worth noting that the Manzini Mall will have a bridge that will link it to the Mavuso Trade and Exhibition Centre. Also, it shall have a bus terminus, taxi rank and market stalls. Almost a year ago, His Majesty King Mswati III cut the sod at the Old Trade Fair Grounds marking the commencement of the project. Nthoese Development founder and Managing Director (MD) Seabelo Herbert Theledi said through the project, they would create about 4 000 job opportunities for emaSwati and 1 400 of them would be permanent, while the 2 600 would be created during the construction phases. He said this meant that, through the project, they would touch the lives of about 40 000 emaSwati, because generally, the salary of an individual benefitted about 10 people.

Undermining

They said they believed that they would play a major role in undermining the alarming rate of unemployment in the country, inequality and poverty. He promised the King that he would be invited to officially open the Manzini Mall in October 2025, as they targeted to complete it around that time. Nthoese Development is a black-owned property development and management company formed in 1993. The company, according to its website, has developed a formidable track record within the South African property investment and development industry through its expertise spanning a range of sectors which include: Retail, offices, and residential.

It is also said that Nthoese owns a property portfolio of dominant retail malls anchored by national retailers in non-metropolitan areas and government-tenanted office buildings in Gauteng and Mpumalanga provinces in the Republic of South Africa. According to the website, Nthoese’s strong and sustained footprint within the property development and investment industry is underpinned by a strong balance sheet and strategic relationships, particularly with South African financial institutions and various industry stakeholders.
