MBABANE – A liSwati was kidnapped and later shot dead in South Africa (SA), allegedly over dagga.

Sibusiso Ngwenya (31), who was living in Orange Farm (SA), was discovered at a local mortuary by his relatives after he had been reported missing since February 18, 2024. His uncle, who preferred to remain anonymous due to the sensitivity of the matter, confirmed the news to this publication.

Gunshot

According to the uncle, Ngwenya had bruises and a gunshot wound on his forehead. His vehicle, phone and dagga consignment, were taken by his kidnappers. He said the kidnappers called Ngwenya’s close acquaintance and demanded E15 000 ransom. His acquaintance immediately reported to us and we negotiated that we pay a deposit of E6 000 and getting assurance that he was alive before paying the remaining balance. The relative stated that Ngwenya left the country to continue with his dagga business in SA, where he was based and rented a flat in Finetown, Orange Farm. He said information gathered from his neighbours was that Ngwenya left his flat on February 18 to see a customer, leaving the door of his flat half open, with the burglar door locked. The uncle said it was reported that the customer was rushing him. The relative said Ngwenya started at a mall at around 2:30pm, where he deposited money to Eswatini.

WhatsApp

He said Ngwenya’s last conversation on WhatsApp was at 3:09pm. The relatives said they discovered that something was amiss after Ngwenya did not respond to messages sent to him via WhatsApp, yet he would respond within a short space of time each time they communicated with him. “We wrote to him on Sunday, the same day he disappeared, and he did not respond, but we let that go and on Monday, we started being uneasy,” the relative said. He said they suspected that dagga dealers from the kingdom could be involved in the crime and believed that they (family) would eventually get closure.
