MATSAPHA – Finally, individuals wishing to join the army can try their luck from Monday as the Umbutfo Swaziland Defence Force (USDF) is searching for over 495 aspiring soldiers.

The announcement was made by the Deputy Army Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Jeffry Tshabalala, during a press conference which was held at USDF Headquarters at Nokwane, Matsapha yesterday morning.

He said following the gaps and available posts in the army which was due to retirements and deaths of soldiers among other things, they had to fill in the vacancies through recruiting new candidates. The deputy army commander said they would recruit one aspiring soldier from each of the 385 chiefdoms, which makes it 385 soldiers. The army will then recruit two candidates from each of the 55 constituencies, which makes it 110 aspiring soldiers. This means that the army will recruit 495 soldiers from chiefdoms and Tinkhundla.

Tshabalala said the recruitment exercise, which would be conducted in the 55 constituencies around the country, would be specifically for members of Ingatja and Imbali. He emphasised that by Ingatja and Imbali, they meant young men and women who were single and do not have children.  “The candidates should be young Swazi men and women between ages 18 and 30.

They should be fit both physically and mentally to survive the rigorous training routines at the Mbuluzi Army Barracks,” he said.
On another note, the deputy army commander said available spaces in the military force were not for people who failed at school and resorted to join the army and those who were just looking for a job.
