MANZINI – TUCOSWA will host May Day celebrations for workers at the Salesian Sports ground again this year.

Vincent Ncongwane, who is the Trade Union Congress of Swaziland (TUCOSWA) Secretary General, when interviewed, confirmed the fact that the commemoration will be held in the Manzini region again.

“We met as a federation and have decided to host our affiliates at Salesian Sports Ground next week Friday,” Ncongwane said.
The secretary general said they had informed the police of their decision to host the event in Manzini and plans were now underway to ensure that workers have an enjoyable day.

“We will not be seeking permission from the police to host the event, it is unlawful to be forced to seek permission and there is no statute in the labour laws that allows the police to demand us to seek permission from them to host Workers Day,” Ncongwane said.

He said the fact that they had informed them was sufficient and that they would not be seeking permission as instructed by the police in previous years.
Police Information and Communications Officer Assistant Superintendent Khulani Mamba, when questioned, said at present the police were not going to say much on the issue involving the hosting of May Day by the federation.

“We have not received a letter from TUCOSWA and we have assured them that when we eventually receive it, we will engage them in amicable talks,” Mamba said briefly.

During last year’s May Day celebrations, also held at Salesian Sports Grounds, the proscribed entity, People’s United Democratic Movement (PUDEMO) President Mario Masuku and former University of Swaziland SRC President Maxwell Dlamini, were arrested by the police. The two men were arrested for allegedly uttering seditious statements.

Petty politics as usual. Provoking the police and hoping to get a response just for a bit of undue credibility. Is that the best their collective intellect can come up with? Clowns!!! May 1 circus is upon us.

I think you need to co-ordinate with the police for security reasons. This has nothing to do with Labour laws, but a general law of the country.
