EZULWINI – Scorpions Darts Club have been officially crowned champions of the Eswatini Royal Insurance Corporation (ESRIC) sponsored league.
The announcement was made during the Eswatini National Darts Association (ENDA) League prize presentation, held at the SibaneSami Hotel yesterday. The ceremony, marking the conclusion of a season that saw the first-round contested this year, was attended by Eswatini Sport and Recreation Council (ESRC) Business Development Manager Zama Tsabedze, ESRIC General Manager Zama Ngcobo, Assistant GM Finance and Life Mduduzi Dlamini and various club representatives.
In a landmark achievement, Scorpions claimed their maiden league title, finally dethroning the now-defunct Malkerns Darts Club, who had dominated the local scene for years.
Speaking on behalf of President Phumlani ‘Kofi’ Ndwandwe, Deputy President Thandeka ‘Tee’ Mkhonto expressed gratitude to ESRIC for a partnership dating back to 2010.
“I remember our first sponsorship was valued at E10 000, but we have now reached E150 000,” Mkhonto noted. “This funding is built on three pillars: Taking the sport to schools, the national league and improving governance and administration.”
She highlighted that the school-level initiative has allowed pupils to compete regionally, yielding positive results for darts development nationwide.
Mkhonto also thanked the government, via the Sports Council, for their E40 000 contribution which funded the national squad’s trip to the Zone VI Games in Zimbabwe. The youth squad’s success was a focal point of the afternoon, having returned with three gold and six bronze medals.
