MBABANE – A familiar Soweto ‘shadow’ loomed over Tambankulu this week as a Kaizer Chiefs legend quietly stepped into the Eswatini Premier League.

Elite League minnows Tabankulu Celtics have made a statement of intent after securing the services of Chiefs legend Humphrey Mlwane, who is reportedly set to steer ‘Batoze Bavume’s fairly balanced ship until the end of the season.

Mlwane steps into the shoes of Ncamiso Nxumalo, who has been with the club since their historic promotion to the top flight this season. The South African tactician, known for his preference for a 4-3-3 formation, has already begun issuing instructions at Celtics training sessions.

His first test will likely come tomorrow when the side host capital city giants Mbabane Swallows in a second-round clash at Tambankulu Stadium at 3pm. ‘Umkhonto KaShaka’ won 2-1 over this side in their opening round.

Mlwane inherits a side currently eighth on the log with 22 points and a game in hand, and is understood to be operating under a clear mandate — to ensure Celtics retain their MTN Premier League status.

Celtics boast a competitive squad, headlined by Malangeni Dlamini, who remains in contention for the golden boot with 10 goals this season.

Mlwane’s arrival adds to the growing list of South African coaches attached to local teams. Defending league champions Nsingizini Hotspurs are currently under the guidance of Mandla Qhogi.

Celtics Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Xolani Dlamini confirmed Mlwane’s presence in the country.

“The reports are true. We are a small team and our goal this season is to maintain our league status,” he said.

Celtics announced themselves in the first round with shock victories over ‘Insingizi Yezulu’ and Royal Leopard, results that sent ripples through the local football fraternity.
