Why our spending habits keep us trapped
Why our spending habits keep us trapped

Madam,

The seduction of instant gratification can be overwhelming. We are constantly being pulled into a cycle of earn, spend and repeat, with the latest gadgets, luxury cars and designer clothes beckoning us to upgrade our lifestyles. However, what is often lost in this relentless pursuit of status is the distinction between looking wealthy and being wealthy. Hence, I would like to share a contrarian view: True wealth is not about looking rich; it is about owning assets that generate income. The wealthy prioritise acquiring assets that appreciate over time, rather than splurging on fleeting status symbols.

When you receive a pay raise or a windfall, it is tempting to upgrade your lifestyle immediately. Yet, this approach can lead to a vicious cycle of earning more and spending more. A better car, a bigger phone and expensive clothes may bring temporary satisfaction, but they do little to secure your financial future. In contrast, the wealthy understand a simple yet powerful principle: Income buys assets, assets create more income and more income creates financial freedom. It is a straightforward equation, but one that is often overlooked in the hustle and bustle of daily life.

The problem with focusing on lifestyle upgrades is that they often come at the expense of building lasting wealth. You are trading off long-term financial freedom for short-term pleasure. You are trading off the possibility of living life on your own terms for the fleeting satisfaction of impressing others.

The question is, is it worth it?
Before upgrading your lifestyle, focus on building a solid financial foundation. Invest in skills that increase your earning potential, start a business or put your money into stocks, real estate, or other assets that work for you even when you are not working. The key is to make your money multiply, rather than just spending it. Anyone can spend money, but few people know how to make it work for them. The goal should not be to look wealthy today, but to become wealthy for life. Rich people buy assets first - things like dividend-paying stocks, rental properties or businesses that generate passive income. The lifestyle upgrade comes later, when financial freedom allows you to live life on your own terms. Think about it: The things you own should either make you money or save you money. If they are not doing one of those two things, they are likely a liability.

The wealthy understand this principle intuitively, which is why they are often seen as frugal or conservative with their finances. It is not about being cheap; it is about being smart.

The world is full of people who earn more and immediately spend more, often on things that depreciate in value. Meanwhile, the truly wealthy prioritise acquiring assets that appreciate over time. They are building a legacy, not just a lifestyle. It is time to rethink our approach to money.

Let us shift our focus from looking rich to building lasting wealth. Let us prioritise assets over status symbols and create a future where financial freedom is within reach. The alternative is to remain trapped in a cycle of debt and consumption, forever chasing the next big thing. The beauty of building wealth is that it is not just about the money - it is about the freedom that comes with it. It is about being able to pursue your passions without being constrained by a 9-to-5 job. It is about being able to spend time with loved ones, travel, or simply enjoy life without worrying about the next paycheque.

The seduction of instant gratification can be overwhelming. We are constantly being pulled into a cycle of earn, spend and repeat, with the latest gadgets, luxury cars and designer clothes beckoning us to upgrade our lifestyles.
