MANZINI - Some members of the public were forced to do push-ups as punishment for not adhering to the lockdown regulations as UEDF military police took charge of Manzini Bus Rank yesterday.

Eyewitnesses said the military police were seen ordering members of the public who were at the bus rank after 9am, to leave. This was after public transport vehicles stopped operating.

They said later on, the military police who were armed with rifles, ordered members of the public who had remained behind to leave the bus rank.
Others were ordered to do push-ups in full view of the people present, including vendors. They alleged that this was after the men failed to give the military police satisfactory answers on why they were at the bus rank at that time.

As the men did the push ups with fists on the tarred bus rank surface, the witnesses said some people used their mobile phones to take pictures and videos. They said their actions landed them in trouble and the military men ordered them to delete the pictures and videos before joining those who were doing the push-ups.

However, the number of push ups could not be ascertained as the witnesses said they were watching from a distance as they feared that they could also be punished.
When this reporter arrived at the bus rank just after 9am, he found the armed military police ordering people who were at the rank to leave as there was no public transport. In fact, the military police told them to go home because the country was on a partial lockdown, which was a measure taken to fight the spread of the coronavirus.

Notably, some of the people who were ordered to leave the bus rank took their luggage and went to sit under the trees near Mzimnene River and waited for public transport, which started operating at 3pm.

However, others walked towards The George Hotel, Manzini Central and Manzini Nazarene Bus Stops to hitchhike.
In that regard, the Manzini Bus Rank was quiet between 9am and 2:15pm when the police allowed public transport vehicles to park inside the rank in order to start ferrying people to their different destinations at 3pm.

The 20-day national partial lockdown started on March 27, 2020, which means that yesterday was the 11th day.
