LOBAMBA – President Ying-Jeou Ma of the Republic of China on Taiwan joined His Majesty King Mswati III in doing almost 10 rounds of running at Somhlolo National Stadium yesterday.

Wearing a golf shirt, shorts and running shoes the president, who arrived at about 7am, found the King already there, as he had been training all along with the burly soldiers.

His Majesty wore a track-suit. Not many words were exchanged initially between the two heads of state as they were eager to carry on from where they ended on Sunday.

They did 40 press-ups like the previous day and then the president did additional leg stretches.

They then started to trot around the stadium, joined by the president’s delegation, which was also dressed accordingly.

The King and the president were not necessarily racing, but their pace was anything but slow. Both leaders are well known in their respective countries for their passion for physical fitness.

After training, the King again emphasised the importance of keeping healthy and in shape by exercising until breaking out into a sweat.

The president is said to have told the King that in Taiwan, he normally did 70 press-ups in a session.

Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Themba Masuku, addressing the president during his tour of World Vision Swaziland’s depot in Matsapha, said he was glad he was not invited to join the heads of state for the training.

The president is expected to jet out of the kingdom tomorrow.
