Time to get ready for farming season
Time to get ready for farming season
Wednesday, September 3, 2025 by Mthobisi Buthelezi

The planting season is already upon us again and emaSwati farmers are getting their fields ready for planting, as we patiently wait for the first rains to come.

Before the onset of long rains, it is important for farmers to start preparing adequately.

According to plantvillage.psu.edu, proper planning is essential for farmers to avoid common mistakes and reap a bountiful harvest. Getting ready to head back to the fields?

Then here are key things you should consider as you prepare for the season:

1. Plan ahead

One of the most important steps in preparing for the planting season is to plan ahead. This means taking the time to determine what crops you want to plant and when you want to plant them. The crop diary also comes in handy when you are planning, as you know what to plant and when to plant.

Consider factors such as weather patterns, soil conditions and market demand when deciding what to plant. Planning ahead will help you make informed decisions and ensure that you have all the necessary resources and inputs when it is time to start planting.

2. Prepare your land

The next step in preparing for the planting season is to prepare your land. This involves clearing any debris, weeds and other unwanted materials from the land. You will also need to till the soil to ensure that it is loose and aerated.

This will help the roots of your plants penetrate the soil more easily and absorb the necessary nutrients. Make sure you practise conservation agriculture, which advocates for less disturbance of the soil, especially during the dry season.

3. Test your soil

Before planting, it is important to test your soil to determine its pH level and nutrient content. This will help you determine what types of fertilisers and soil amendments you need to add to your soil to optimise crop growth. Soil testing is also important because it can help you identify any potential soil-borne diseases or pests that may affect your crops. Soil samples can be delivered at Khuba Traders branch in Manzini, provided payment to RESCorp has been made, as they are collected and delivered at RESCorp Agricultural Laboratory at Mhlume. Contact person at RESCorp is Vusie Malubane at 7603 5325.

NOTE: Results take 7 to 14 days depending on how busy the lab is at the time of delivery.

4. Purchase quality seeds

Another important step in preparing for the planting season is to purchase high-quality seeds. It is important to purchase seeds that are adapted to the local environment and have a good germination rate. You may also want to consider purchasing hybrid seeds that are resistant to pests and diseases.

5. Stock up on inputs

In addition to seeds, you will need to stock up on other inputs such as fertilisers, pesticides and herbicides. Make sure to purchase these inputs well in advance of the planting season to avoid any delays or shortages. It is also important to use these inputs responsibly and follow the manufacturer’s instructions to avoid any negative effects on the environment or human health. Make sure you source fertilisers such as Pannar, Sasol, Ekor, Seed Co and many more.
