AT Mosdene Boran Stud’s first produc¬tion auction, held on Saturday, August 9, at the Silver Lakes Farm Hotel in Pretoria, Gauteng, Lot 10 (Odysseus E18-138), a Boran bull with a pedigree of legendary sires, sold for R2 million.
Described by the Mosdene team as ‘goosebumps beautiful’, the bull was sold to Cape Town-based Hein and Twiggy Biekart of Von Lieben Boran Stud.

Speaking to Farm¬er’s Weekly, Jaco van der Walt, owner of Mosdene Boran Stud in Limpopo, said Odysseus will mark his seventh birthday on September 4, 2025, adding that he has more than lived up to expectations.
“Odysseus ticks all the box¬es you would want in a Bo¬ran bull. He is structurally correct, well balanced, masculine, has proven genetics and to top it off, he’s a proven herd sire, with over 200 calves on the ground already,” said Van der Walt. Odysseus’s strong pedigree includes legends like Impie, Cojack, Jackie, Rustin, Timmy and TLM02-12.

The other four bulls on offer sold for an average of R837 500, with the auction gener-ating more than R85 million in total turnover.
Across all categories, the lot average was R157 741. Prices peaked not only on bulls, but also on top-performing females, with in-calf cows selling for up to R320 000 and heifers (in-calf) reaching R220 000. Semen lots sold for up to R7 500.
Van der Walt also confirmed that Mosdene did retain a semen share from the prized bull, ensuring his sought-after genetics continue to benefit herds into the future
