MBABANE – Under the bright lights of Doncaster’s renowned Dome Arena, Eswatini taekwondo star Thandukukhanya Dlamini once again showcased his class on the international stage.
The UK-based martial artist clinched a gold medal at the prestigious Dome Open Taekwondo Championships held at The Dome in Doncaster, England, over the weekend, adding another impressive chapter to his remarkable sporting journey.
Dlamini’s triumph drew widespread praise from his teammates at Wessex Taekwondo, who hailed him as one of the club’s standout performers at the competition. Taking to their official Instagram page, the team celebrated his achievement and the determination that carried him to the top of the podium.
“He put on outstanding performances all day, left everything on the mat and came away with gold. Thando’s story is truly inspiring and makes us at Team Wessex so happy to see him do well and succeed because he deserves it,” read part of the club’s tribute.
The gold medal contributed to an impressive outing for Wessex Taekwondo, which finished fourth overall at the tournament after collecting at least five medals through Dlamini and his teammates.
Dlamini’s latest success further cements his growing reputation in the United Kingdom, where he has become one of Eswatini’s most celebrated sporting exports. Earlier this year, he achieved another milestone when he was crowned Sportsman of the Year at the prestigious British Army Sports Awards.
The 33-year-old overcame strong competition from shooter Rob Vincent and sprinter Marvric Pamphile, both representing the UK Army, to claim the coveted accolade in a category sponsored by Vodafone UK.
His rise to prominence is made even more remarkable by the adversity he has overcome.
Dlamini spent two years battling cancer before making a successful return to competition. Since his comeback, he has enjoyed a string of notable victories, including titles at the Liverpool Open and Wales Open tournaments.
Those achievements, coupled with his resilience and consistency, have transformed Dlamini into an inspirational figure both within the British Army sporting fraternity and back home in Eswatini, where he continues to fly the national flag with distinction.
