MBABANE – Eswatini runners who missed the initial entry window for the 2026 Comrades Marathon now have one final opportunity to secure a place on the start line.
The iconic race, scheduled for Sunday, 14 June 2026, remains a staple for local athletes, including many teachers who regularly test their mettle on the road. As 2026 is an even-numbered year, the event will be an ‘Up Run’. The gruelling journey begins at Durban’s City Hall and concludes at the Hollywoodbets Scottsville Racecourse in Pietermaritzburg.
To facilitate this last-minute dash for spots, the Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) has officially opened its substitution ballot application window. This allows runners across the globe, including those from Eswatini, to vie for places vacated by entrants who have withdrawn.
Applications opened today, Thursday, March 12, 2026 at 10am and will remain accessible until 4:30 pm on April 2. Prospective participants must submit their details online via the official Comrades Marathon website or the dedicated mobile app.
Crucially, this process differs from the initial entry phase. Substitution entries are not allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Instead, every valid application submitted during the three-week window will be entered into a ballot draw, with successful runners selected at random. Applicants will receive email notification after April 2 regarding their status. Once selected, entry fees will be automatically debited from the registered card within 24 hours. A non-refundable E10 transaction fee applies to all submissions.
Organisers have issued a stern warning against scams, reiterating that entries are only valid through official channels. Purchasing from third-party platforms or individuals could lead to immediate disqualification.
Comrades Marathon Eswatini Ambassador Khetsiwe Hlophe urged local runners to seize the moment. "EmaSwati should grab this rare opportunity with both hands," said Hlophe, a four-time finisher of the 87km course. "Comrades is the ultimate test of resilience, and it isn't just for the elite. The feeling at the finish line is truly priceless."
While entries are technically sold out, the qualification window remains active. To compete, runners must finish an officially-sanctioned race within the required time by 4:30pm on May 4, 2026. The minimum qualifying standard stands at 4:59:59 for a full marathon.
