MBABANE – All is set for the much-anticipated fifth edition of the Lubombo Marathon, which is scheduled to take place this Saturday in Siteki.
Athletics Eswatini (AE) Marketing and Communications Officer, Victor ‘Mavikane’ Dlamini, has confirmed that all is looking good as per reports from the hosting club TDZ Athletics Club.
Dlamini issued a rallying cry to the nation, urging all emaSwati to support the initiative as it continues to grow in stature.
He highlighted that the stakes are higher than ever this year, as the marathon officially serves as a qualifying event for the world-renowned Comrades Marathon. This status makes the race a vital fixture for long-distance athletes seeking to secure their spot in the South African ultra-marathon.
The response from the athletic community has been overwhelming, with over 1 000 runners expected to take to the starting line after registration officially closed last week.
The magnitude of the event is already being felt within the Lubombo Region, as Dlamini noted that local hotels and lodges are reportedly fully booked to accommodate a significant influx of international participants.
While the federation is pleased with the logistical preparations, Dlamini made a fresh appeal to the business community for continued corporate support.
He emphasised that such partnerships are essential for the marathon to maintain its elite status and provide a high-quality experience for both local and foreign competitors. With the route spanning the scenic but challenging Lubombo landscape, the stage is now perfectly set for a weekend of top-tier athletics in Siteki.
