Eswatini’s reigning EnduroCross Champion is once again preparing to take on one of the toughest races on the planet, the legendary Roof of Africa, with the goal of proudly raising the Eswatini flag on the international stage.

After another successful season both locally and across the border, Mathew Van Zuydam continues to establish himself as one of Eswatini’s leading off-road competitors. Known for his technical ability, calculated aggression and determination, Mathew has built a reputation for delivering results at every level of competition.

A two-time Eswatini EnduroCross Champion, Mathew’s racing journey began at just five years old, inspired by a family deeply involved in motorcycles. After progressing through junior motocross, he later returned to competition through mountain biking, downhill racing, motocross and eventually hard enduro.

“Racing has always been part of who I am,” says Mathew. “Every season is another opportunity to improve, learn and push myself against stronger competition.”

The 2025 season was another milestone year. Mathew secured his second Eswatini EnduroCross Championship title and continued his strong form into 2026, where he currently leads the local championship standings. Across the border, he achieved his biggest regional success yet by winning the 2026 Lowveld Enduro Silver A Championship against some of South Africa’s most experienced riders.

His determination was tested at the 2025 Roof of Africa, where he competed through a significant shoulder injury and still managed an impressive 28th overall finish in the Bronze category. For many riders, simply completing the Roof is an achievement, making his performance a testament to his resilience and commitment.

Now returning for the 2026 Roof of Africa, Mathew’s goal is clear, achieve a top Silver class finish and continue progressing towards the highest levels of Southern African hard enduro.

Beyond the Roof, he aims to defend his EnduroCross title, challenge for the 2026 MX3 Motocross Championship and prepare for his move into the Pro B class of the Lowveld Enduro Championship.

Alongside his racing career, Mathew is passionate about growing motorsport in Eswatini. As head of the Enduro Department on the Eswatini Motocross Association committee, he is committed to creating opportunities for young riders and helping develop the next generation of talent.

“The ability and technical skill of riders from Eswatini is incredibly high. What we need is more exposure and opportunities. I want young riders to see what is possible if they are willing to work for it.”

Mathew’s 2025 Roof of Africa campaign was made possible through the support of his family, friends, sponsors and partners, including Valvoline, Optica Visual/Profound, PG Glass, Total Construction, Mbabane Motors, Nsimbi, Turbo Diesel, Oasis, Emlembe Water, Ngwenya Glass, Dixies and JAC Motors. He extended his sincere appreciation to everyone who contributed financially, provided equipment, logistical assistance or encouragement throughout his journey.

As preparations continue for Roof of Africa 2026, Mathew and his family are seeking partners who want to support Eswatini sporting talent and join him in carrying the national flag onto one of the world’s most prestigious hard enduro stages.
