In this week’s Gcwala edition, we shine a spotlight on a young woman, whose drive, talent and confidence are lighting up the future.

Meet Mayenziwe Shabangu, a 19-year-old student at UNESWA Mbabane Campus who recently claimed the title of Miss Freshers.

Her story is one of ambition and authenticity, a young lady who refuses to settle for mediocrity and instead strives to conquer every challenge that comes her way.

During a warm meet-and-greet with the Gcwala team, Mayenziwe described herself with a sparkle in her eye.

 “I would describe myself as a young, ambitious and purpose-driven girl. I don’t like to lose, meaning I make sure to conquer whatever situation I am in. I’m an overachiever. I am a confident, but down-to-earth kind of girl,” she shared.

Her journey into the world of academia is as inspiring as her personality. She is enrolled in Environmental Management and Occupational Safety and Health (EMOSH), a programme she’s grown to love deeply. When asked what drew her to this field, she explained, “Industries like mining, construction, healthcare and manufacturing all need EMOSH graduates.

 “Knowing there are stable and meaningful career paths can inspired me to study it and the idea of being a safety officer feels like a dream too me.

“It also involves critical thinking, science and management and I like challenges.”

Her passion for her chosen path is complemented by memories from her high school days, small moments that sparked her confidence and creativity.

She revealed: “Well, it’s not that big but it was for me. My best memory was when I had designed a dress and tailored it myself.

“The best part was when I was praised by my head teacher, saying it was the best, even my mum praised it. I was so happy and proud because it was something I had made on my own,” she said.

Such moments highlight her innate talent and her willingness to put her skills into practice, no matter how small they seem.

Recently crowned Miss Freshers Mbabane Campus, Mayenziwe shared how the victory made her feel.

“Honestly, it was the best feeling ever. I was so happy and a little overwhelmed because it felt unreal in that moment. I didn’t think I’d win; I just thought maybe I’d win best dressed.
