Paving the way for economic transformation
Paving the way for economic transformation
Monday, October 6, 2025 by Liam Khumalo

Madam,

With the Kingdom of Eswatini entering a new and promising chapter in economic development, I would love to thank in large part, the economic leadership and unwavering commitment of Finance Minister Neal Rijkenberg. His dedicated efforts in maintaining strong international partnerships, particularly with the United States of America which have resulted in a significant milestone that positions Eswatini at the forefront of regional trade and investment. Through careful negotiation, diplomacy and policy foresight, Rijkenberg has helped our country secure a 10 per cent tariff advantage over neighbouring countries such as South Africa and Mozambique. This distinction is more than just a statistic but a game-changing opportunity that places Eswatini in a competitive and highly strategic position within global markets.

This preferential treatment under US trade frameworks allows Eswatini to export goods to the American market at more favourable terms, giving our industries a distinct edge. It also means that Eswatini will now be a preferred gateway for products manufactured in South Africa and other neighbouring countries seeking access to the US under better tariffs. This elevates us to the status of a regional trade hub which comes with immense economic benefits, including increased foreign direct investment, regional integration and access to new markets.

More importantly, this achievement supports Eswatini’s broader national vision of sustainable economic growth, job creation and industrial development. With more investors now considering the kingdom as a base of operations, we can expect increased activity across sectors such as manufacturing, logistics, agriculture and services.

This will lead to the establishment of new businesses, expansion of existing ones, and most critically, the creation of much needed employment opportunities for emaSwati. The minister’s forward-thinking approach also speaks to his commitment to unlocking long-term prosperity for the nation. By fostering a stable and attractive investment climate, backed by clear policies and global partnerships, Rijkenberg is demonstrating that Eswatini is not only open for business but is also capable of competing with much larger economies. In a region where economic challenges are not uncommon, such leadership is both rare and invaluable.

His ability to navigate complex international trade dynamics, while remaining focused on domestic priorities, is a true testament to his capability and vision. We extend our sincere gratitude and appreciation to him for his extraordinary contributions.

His leadership has sown the seeds of a brighter, more inclusive economic future for all. As we continue to move forward as a nation, we are confident that the policies and partnerships he has championed will continue to bear fruit for generations to come.
