MBABANE – Badminton Swaziland (BSD) will end their five year absence in international tournaments, by sending a team to the Under-19 Championships in Maputo.

The event will take place in July.

BSD last sent a team to an international competition in 2006.

The association decided to take a break as they felt they were not competing effectively and wanted to focus on development.

Secretary, Sihle Mokoena, confirmed yesterday that they had received an invitation to send a team of at least four players to the championships. He said they were hopeful that the Swaziland National Sports Council (SNSC) will help them take part in the tournament.

"We have been working hard in the past five years and we consider ourselves ready to compete at that level now. We consider sending a team that comprised of two men and women," he said.

Mokoena said the team will play singles, doubles and mixed doubles. He said the association also plans to send a team to the All Africa Games to be held in Mozambique in September. "We have only targeted these two international tournaments. The team needs to have enough time preparing for the tournaments, so we would like to select it as early as possible," he said.

Meanwhile, Mokoena said Namibia have joined South Africa in confirming their presence in the Badminton bash to be held from February 25-27 at the Mavuso sports centre.

He said they were still waiting for confirmation from Mozambique and Botswana as they also sent invitations to the two countries.

"The preparations are almost done and we are now going to wait for the confirmation of the two countries. Otherwise the three days event will be a great success," he said.
