NFD stronger than Premier League - 'Chaklas'
MBABANE – Eswatini football icon Abel ‘Chaklas’ Shongwe has ignited debate, declaring the MTN National First Division (NFD) superior to the Premier League.
Speaking at Killarney Sports Ground on Sunday, the former South Africa’s Kaizer Chiefs star lambasted the tendency to underestimate NFD sides.
“Frankly, the NFD outshines the top flight. There’s a misguided notion that National First Division teams can’t compete, but their quality is undeniable,” Shongwe asserted, lamenting the lack of respect for NFD talent capable of national team exploits.
Reflecting on his deep ties with Malanti Chiefs, Shongwe highlighted his coaching stint under the chairman, including during the era of the late Thabo ‘Koki’ Vilakati. He remains committed to Malanti, despite perceptions he’s shifted focus to other clubs. “I’m still grafting behind the scenes, lending my experience to elevate Eswatini football,” he said.
On the Premier League title race, with one match remaining, Shongwe was cagey but tipped Nsingizini Hotspurs, whom he’s worked with, to edge their final clash against Sidwashini United. “Nsingizini are a cracking outfit, but Royal Leopard face a stern test against Green Mamba. In football, anything is possible—Leopard have the mettle to nick it,” he mused.

Shongwe now coaches Fernie Battalions in South Africa’s ABC Motsepe League (since December 2023), having led Secunda M Stars and Sivutsa NPC. A player’s representative and academy head, he has mentored talents like Tinashe Nengomasha and Onismor Bhasera. His playing career began at Mbabane Highlanders, followed by Kaizer Chiefs (1986–1988), Wits University, Dynamos, Moroka Swallows and AmaZulu, with caps in the Eswatini national team.
