MBABANE – It is back to action in the Eswatini School Sports Association (ESSA) ball games.

This past Monday saw the open category soccer boys from Motshane and Siphocosini high schools took centre stage at Prince of Wales Sports Ground. The match that was to start at noon ended up kicking off at 1pm due to Siphocosini High not being aware of the change in their playing time. Motshane spent their time waiting for their counterparts wisely as they had a thorough warm-up. The chilly weather conditions needed for all teams to have a thorough warm-up before the match. Siphocosini who opted for a full green kit, were first to kick off, while Motshane wore their sky blue colours. Motshane showed promise in their build-up plays and deserved to break the deadlock first with their direct route play in the middle of the park.

Solid

Their shotstopper proved to be solid, as he launched a counter attack that eventually found the back of the net. It was through their goalkeeper’s quick thinking as well as their play maker, Sabelo Bhembe, who was able to identify a run made by his left winger Sibonakaliso Nkhambule. He played the ball in his path, which beat Siphocosini’s shotstopper with a blistering ground shot in the 21st minute. Siphocosini tried to regroup after they found themselves trailing, with vast experience in their midfield; they played more long balls that found their targets. Siphocosini is one of the schools that have experienced players who include the likes of National First First Division side Ezulwini United’s Lihle Mnisi. However, things were just not going according to their plans. With the height their squad has, set pieces should have been a walk in the park for them. They created countless chances in and outside the box, but their finishing was not up to par.

The first half was evenly matched in terms of duels won and lost, especially in the midfield area. Motshane did not afford Siphocosini too much space at the back; they kept a balanced line. It was in the dying minutes of the first half that had the whole of Prince of Wales on their feet. Some of the supporters were disputing and some were celebrating with Motshane, who had scored their second in the 45th minute through Sibonakaliso for his second of the game. The second half was a well-contested affair, as Siphocosini wanted an early goal to bring themselves back into the game. Lihle combined well with Mlamuli Zandamela, who assisted in midfield; however, it was not enough for the side. Their sharpshooters had left their scoring boots at home, as they failed to find the back of the net with at least three obvious chances presented to them. The game ended 2-0 in favour of Motshane High, while Sibonakaliso registered a brace for himself.
