MBABANE – Pugilist Veliswa Magaya is off to India to represent the country on the biggest stage in world boxing.

Magaya, who is one of the country’s most promising boxers, left the country yesterday for the IBA Women’s World Championships 2023. They are scheduled for March 15 to 26 at the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex in New Delhi, India. IBA is the International Boxing Association. Eswatini Boxing Association (EBA) President Webster Lukhele announced the latest development.

“EBA strongly hopes that this move will motivate more women in the sport. Together we can uplift our sport,” he said. The costs of the trip could not be immediately ascertained, as Lukhele was yet to reply to a message sent to him at the time of compiling this report. This publication also wanted to establish the criterion used to select the travelling boxer. However, early this year the EBA did stress on the need to invest on the girl child. It was reliably gathered that the tournament would have 12 weight categories at the highly-anticipated event. Magaya will compete in the 50kg division. The event is further said to be offering participants a lucrative prize fund of US$2.4 million (over E43.9 million). Gold medallists are expected to share over E1.8 million.
