MBABANE – National team swimmer, Cameron Jele, is riding on a crest of wave.

Jele was back in the pool yesterday for the men’s 50 metres freestyle event at the ongoing FINA World Swimming Championships in Melbourne, Australia. FINA is the International Swimming Federation.  He set a personal best (pb) time of 28:23 seconds. His previous record was 28:90 seconds. Meanwhile, Raya Young also set a new pb record for the women’s 50 metres backstroke event. She set a personal best times of 35:86 seconds.

It was an improvement from the previous 39:46 seconds. However, the finishing time was not enough to earn her a spot in the semi-finals, as she needed to clock at least 26:54 seconds. It was Young’s second PB in a space of about four days. This past Tuesday, she swam the 100 metres backstroke and set a personal best of 01:18:68 minutes from a previous record of 1:20.11.

According to the swimmers’ schedule, eyes are on Jele as he competes in the 50-metre backstroke alongside Simanga Dlamini who will dive into the pool for the 100-metre butterfly. Meanwhile, the championships are being staged over six days since Tuesday, with heats in the morning sessions and the semi-finals and finals in the evening.
Reached for comment Eswatini Swimming Association (ESA) President Herman Jele said they were impressed with the time improvement.

Best

“The times they are clocking are in line with our vision. We are not about competing but our clear measure of progress is improving in time. We are happy about their performance considering that they were competing against the world’s best, but they were able to improve their time,” Jele said. The total prize money for the FINA World Swimming Championships Melbourne 2022 is about E37 million for the best-ranked swimmers in individual events and for the best ranked relay teams in relay events.

A total of 1 000 athletes from over 180 countries are competing in the 48 medals events since Tuesday.  The prize money will be equally distributed to men and women for both individual athletes and relay teams from the first place to eighth place.

Swimmers’ schedule:
