MBABANE – Former Eswatini national volleyball team Coach Thulani Maphosa has added another feather in his cap.

The Zimbabwe-born coach has been appointed a Federation of International Volleyball (FIVB) Instructor. FIVB is the governing body of beach volley, which is yet to be introduced in the country. FIVB Head of Technical and Development Department Steve Tuton confirmed Maphosa’s new role through a letter, which was released last Friday. “The FIVB has great pleasure to appoint you as a FIVB instructor. Your candidature was reviewed and recommended by the FIVB Technical and Coaching Commission members to appoint you as FIVB instructor,” reads part of the letter.

Maphosa has been FIVB coaches’ trainer since 2019, after spending about 14 years in the country, winning medals with the national teams and Correctional Sunrise. He shot to fame in 2018 when he steered Correctional Ladies to win the 2018 Zone VI Championships while he was also the national team technical director. It was also on that year in May when the research and director at Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation was appointed Malawi Males National Team coach, a contract which runs until the end of July next year. Meanwhile, Eswatini National Volleyball Association (ENVA) has congratulated the Zimbabwe-born local for this milestone, saying he deserved it. ENVA Secretary General (SG) Nonophile ‘Afi’ Nkosi was elated by this appointment.

“He was responsible for developing and changing the landscape of the sport in the country. While with us, he was also the trainer of the local coaches at that time and Correctional is a product of his work. He led them to high performance and was able to forge relations with other countries such that we’re now able to even play friendly matches with them,”  Dlamini said.
Meanwhile, his former side, Correctional volleyball are in Zambia for this years’ Zone VI Championships, starting today until December 2022.
