MBABANE -  The Somhlolo National Stadium yesterday opened its gates  to  Members of Parliament (MPs) who were treated to  a steamy workout session led by Shukuma Eswatini team.

The training session, including participation in various sporting activties such as soccer, table tennis, tennis and darts, was incorporated in the programme of the 2022-2026 Parliament for Eswatini Wellness and HIV/AIDS Strategic Plan launch event. Other activities included the tug of war and ‘big foot’, which was a test of teamwork. Also in attendance were government stakeholders that included  the National Emergency Response Council on HIV/AIDS (NERCHA). The Speaker of the House of Assembly, Petros Mavimbela, encouraged the MPs to incorporate regular exercise and healthy eating habits beyond their families but in the 59 constituencies.

Mavimbela also encouraged wellness in the workplace to ensure a productive and healthy nation. “Physical exercise is immensely important and as representatives of the people in the House of Parliament, we need to encourage health and fitness in our communities and in the workplace.

Unhealthy

“If the people are unhealthy, they are prone to sicknesses and that will result in a number of challenges in the country. Now that we have launched this strategic plan, we need to be advocates for health and fitness and also making it a lifestyle,” Mavimbela said. The Clerk to Parliament, Benedict Xaba, thanked the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) for supporting the development of the new strategic plan which will have a positive impact in the workplace and the constituencies. “As a nation, we need more of these sessions which are ideal stress relievers and improve production in the workplace.  There is a need for wellness and we need to have a proper structure for it. We will test this initiative by having activities for the staff every Friday and once a month for the MPs,” Xaba said. Mhlangatane MP Madala Mhlanga marvelled at the success of the wellness initiative and the indiscriminate awareness for HIV and AIDS through the strategic plan, adding that he would progress to empower the people in his community.
