MBABANE – There is a new sheriff in town.

Speak of thriving in the most awkward circumstances, that is what characterised Victor Mavundla, who revealed having enjoyed playing golf under 36 degrees of scortching temperatures and bagging his first Previc Golf Challenge  championship. The amateur golfer, who is a member of Mananga Golf Course, was among 59 golfers who joined the monthly tournament sponsored by fellow golfer Pastor Victor Masilala, with E85 000 in January. Mavundla amassed an exclusive 38 points, dethroning last month’s champion Nathan Keon at Mananga Golf Course on Saturday.

“The saying; practice makes perfect, I think practice is one of the factors that helped me to win this tournament. Another factor could be the temperatures being so hot at 36 degrees celsus. I enjoy playing in such temperatures,” Mavundla said. His love for the sport also inspired him to sponsor the annual Electric Current Golf Tournament which is played around November and carries lucrative prizes valued up to E100 000. As a businessman, he alluded to the benefits of playing golf, which he applied to improve his perspective on life and business ventures. “Playing golf helps me improve   the way I look at life and doing business. In golf the first lesson I learnt is that of forgiving yourself after making a bad decision. If you don’t forgive yourself you can’t win in the game or in business. I intend to defend my title in the next edition and I will work on the few mistakes I made. I would like to thank the director of Previc Mr Victor Masilela for giving us an opportunity to exercise and win wonderful prizes,” he said.

Only one point shy of the champion, Sabelo Simelane settled for the runner-up position and Lewis Thobela came in third with a total of 36 points. The latter was also a big winner on the day, winning two novelty prizes for nearest to pin 2/11 and 5/14 as well as the two club winner.  A count back (c/b) on 35 points separated Bhekumusa Mthethwa  on position four from Welcome Vilane, who was placed fifth. Speaking on behalf of the captain, Fikile Mdluli also sang praises to the sponsor for presenting local golfers with the unique Mananga golfing experience which contributes to the development of golf in Eswatini. “We are grateful to Previc Investments for the sponsorship and to the golfers for the support. We always have healthy numbers on the golf course,” Mdluli said.
