EZULWINI – They call him ‘The Beast’.

That is returning Mbabane Highlanders’ South African veteran striker Josef Lekata. The former Premier Soccer League (PSL) striker with Amazulu and Black Leopards was unveiled alongside three new signings on Tuesday evening in Ezulwini, Highlanders’ clubhouse. In his brief comments about his return to the black and white Inkunz’emnyama ensemble, the Eswatini Telecom Charity Cup 2019 winner and top goalscorer is buying into those talking about him being free-scoring forward Sabelo ‘Sikhali’ Ndzinisa’s replacement. Some sectors were quick to take to social media platforms, where they suggested he was here as the replacement. Lekata is only here on a short-term six-month contract to be precise. “I’m here to finish the job I started a few seasons back. I must say I’m not here to replace anyone but to do my job,” he said.

Pressure

He had been asked if he felt pressure stepping in the shoes of the team’s 23-goal hero last season who signed a three-year contract with Green Mamba a couple of weeks ago. Lekata was unveiled alongside former Vovovo centre back Aristo Tamuzi, another former Black Leopards attacking midfielder in Lesotho’s Tshwarelo Bereng and central midfielder Mpendulo Tfomo from Moneni Pirates. Interestingly, Lekata will be wearing the jersey number 11 left idle by ‘Sikhali’ who played two good seasons for Highlanders. He netted 19 goals in his first season and finished as runner-up in both seasons. He also won the MTN Premier League Player of the Season 2021/22 award.
