MBABANE – Despite an 18-hour flight and little rest time, swimmer Damien De Souza started the competition on a high in the CANA Africa Swimming Championships currently ongoing in Tunis, Tunisia.

The Swim Lab swimmer finished second in the 100m freestyle yesterday on his personal best time of 59:58 seconds. Despite finishing second from the seven competitors, it was not enough to see him go through to the next round as he needed to be first. He left the country on Tuesday and arrived the following day after an 18-hour flight. He had travelled with Coach and Manager Meluleki ‘Sluga’ Simelane who confirmed yesterday that all was well and the athlete got a chance to familiarise himself with the environment before the competitions.

Remaining

Some of the events remaining for De Souza include the 50m breaststroke, 100m breaststroke, 50m freestyle and 50m butterfly. He will be back in the pool today for the 100m breaststroke and the 50m butterfly. “Damien is one of the youngest swimmers in the competitions as he is only 15 years old, while he is competing against swimmers some of whom are even above 27 years old. Looking at his first results, we commend his performance and we are hoping that he will do even better in the coming competitions as four events remain,” he said.
