MBABANE – National team pool player Sithembiso ‘Dodge’ Matsebula is determined to maintain his dominance as the king of the cue sport in the Masters Tournament penned for Sunday morning at Malkerns Game Room.

The action will get underway at 9am. The tournament will feature 32 players aged above 40, who would be competing in a knockout format in a race to five points. The championship title would be tightly-contested. Some of the players who would be gunning to snatch the championship from the two-time champion, Matsebula, include Romeo Da Silver, former champion Sifiso Dlamini, David Masuku and Mduduzi ‘Top Dog’ Mngomezulu, among others.

Success

Speaking of his expectations in the tournament, Matsebula said; “Determination, passion and daily practice are my secret to success. I’m training individually for the tournament and when you compete, you basically take out what you prepared for psychologically and otherwise.” The tournament is self-sponsored as the E100 registration per player contributes towards the prizes. The championship title carries E800 cash prize. Eswatini Cue Sport Association (ECSA) Secretary General (SG) Mbongeni ‘Mdlikiza’ Gamedze said 18 players had already registered by yesterday afternoon and they included national team female player Thandiswa Dlamini.

“The tournament is aimed at giving the masters game-time, since most of them are club owners and don’t get much competition. It is good for socialising and unifying the players. The players will be ranked through these tournaments as we plan to host them frequently,” Mdlikiza said. Players were urged to keep time or risk being removed from the line-up. This is contained in the rules of the game which state that all players are expected to adhere to. Gamedze further said players and spectators were compelled to exercise self-discipline and making the playing venue welcoming to people of all ages including juniors, women and children who are fans of the sport, by abstaining from alcohol consumption and smoking within the game room premises.
