MBABANE – Athletics Eswatini (AE) President Zakhele Dlamini has declared that athletics is the mother of all sports.

The president said this on Tuesday at Esibayeni Lodge during a strategic meeting between two boards of Athletics Eswatini (AE) and Eswatini Schools Sports Association (ESSA). “As AE ours is to regulate and develop the sport. We want to produce athletes that will represent the country in 2032,” Dlamini said. The association’s vision, Brisbane 2032, is to have a competing squad in the tournament which will take place from July 23 to August 8, 2032, in Brisbane, Australia. He went on to say that it was a good move for AE to engage schools to produce the new athletes who will represent the country at international level. “We want to produce new ‘Swazi Bolt’s’ who will compete and represent the country well at international stages,’’ he said.

He further, lamented the fact that the country’s schools do not participate in some athletic games such as cross country. “Our focus is to identify and nurture talent in both track and field events. We need to also engage those schools who are not participating in athletics and find out why they are not participating. This will help us find their challenges and we will then find a way to help them,” he said. The president finally, urged schools’ principals and government to help in the development of sports in the country, as sports help to put the country on the world map. “If we encourage children to participate in sports, it will help them desist from wandering up and down the streets as they would concentrate on sports,’’ he said.
