EZULWINI – Most local elite football stars are forgotten after quitting the top flight. However, it is gradually becoming a norm that they retire themselves to the regional lower leagues.

This is the case with former national team, Sihlangu, Mbabane Swallows and most recently, Manzini Sea Birds’ talented winger Darren ‘Dazza’ Christie. The former Denver Sundowns dribbling wizard who last appeared for Sea Birds in the top flight before this season’s second window in January, has joined the team with other former top flight names.

He is now registered with XI Experience under the Maphalaleni Promotion League in the Hhohho Regional Football Association (HRFA). His teammates are former Young Buffaloes’ midfielder Sibusiso ‘Hurrah’ Lukhele and then Royal Leopard and Vovovo midfielder Phinda Nkonyane.

Also, he has linked up with former Denver Sundowns and Umbelebele goalkeeper Sandile ‘Khune’ Zwane. They are currently placed second in the log table with their strong rivals Young Lovers in pole position.

Lovers also had former Swallows star Senzo Dlamini in their books last season but are now said to have a forward from Mbabane Citizens.
“We have most of the elite league experienced players with ‘Dazza’ the latest to join us. Hurrah and Phinda joined us first and we are hopeful to qualify for the play-offs,” confirmed one of the club’s officials Mdamara Nyamane yesterday.

He said there were about six games to go and the competition among the top four was still wide open. His rival from Lovers, who referred to himself as Skhiya, also confirmed it was still anyone’s game to the Super League play-offs.

However, both officials were not certain of the points either club had at the top of the table, with XI Experience expecting to be granted points for a pending case which Nyamane said could put them at the summit.
Christie said he would not comment much about his new team but only stated that he was having fun. Meanwhile, Hurrah was on duty but confirmed he was in the team while Nkonyane said it was all for the love of the game.

“Since I’m not playing with the big boys, I had to continue playing somewhere and here we are not just players but also guiding upcoming youngsters,” he said.
He said they were working hard to reach the playoffs and personally he was ready to keep playing even in the Super League if they qualified. The HRFA office also confirmed having these players in some of their teams at Maphalaleni.
