MBABANE – Practising clean sport is the main goal for the Eswatini National Netball Association (ENNA).

In collaboration with Eswatini Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association (EOCGA), the ENNA will conduct anti-doping workshops to ensure that netballers practice clean sport and do not contravene the World Anti-Doping Act (WADA). This announcement was made by ENNA President Simangele Motsa. WADA is the international organisation and was created in 1999 to promote, coordinate and monitor the fight against doping in all forms of sports. The workshop is aimed at educating officials about prohibited substances in and out of competition. It will also teach them on how, where and when to conduct doping tests.

The 11 stages of doping tests will be dealt with in depth and these comprise the selection of the athlete to be tested, notification of the athlete, reporting to the doping control station, sample collection, the provision of blood samples, the volume of urine, the splitting of samples, sealing of samples, measuring specific gravity of the sample to ensure that it is not diluted, completing the doping forms and the laboratory processes.

Stabilises

“As soon as the situation around the COVID-19 pandemic stabilises, we will host the anti-doping workshop. The football fraternity had their workshop recently at Thokoza in Mbabane and it was a success. This workshop is important to us because practising clean sport is our mandate and we need to be educated on it,” said Motsa. During the suspension of all sporting activities and lockdown aimed at terminating the spread of the coronavirus that has killed over 40 000 as per yesterday’s live world update, the president urged athletes to be cautious of what they eat lest it contain the prohibited substances. She also warned them to avoid purchasing medication from pharmacies but rely on doctors for diagnosis and prescriptions. She urged athletes to familiarise themselves with the substances that they need to avoid considering that the sanctions for violating anti-doping regulations range from a reprimanded ban to a lifetime ban in all competitions.
