MBABANE – Mbabane parkrun champion Nkululeko Gama yesterday met his match in Swazi Slojos’ Zwelithini Mndzebele, who challenged him to two laps of parkrun.

The duo was inseparable from the starting point and after reaching the finish line in 15:49 minutes and 15:58 minutes, respectively. They set off for the second lap which they again completed in 16 minutes at the Mbabane Club.
“We are preparing for the VOC Race next week and this is the best way to exercise,” said Mndzebele.

The second place winner admitted Gama’s superiority but swore to win first prize in the VOC Race. The champion, who looked calm after the two laps, said he was happy to be challenged as it motivated him to work even harder. “I am a 21km runner and Mndzebele normally takes 10km. I welcomed the challenge and this was more of a practice for him,” said Gama.

The first female to scan her bar code was junior athlete, Simphiwe Gama, who clocked 20:14 minutes. She was followed by Waterford Kamhlaba Lecturer Zoe. In third place was University of Eswatini (UNESWA) athlete Gcinile Magongo, who came through after 24:08 minutes.

Hermien Bijken from Lonehill Parkrun in Johannesburg was among yesterday’s visitors and ran her 123rd run. Bijken said she was in the country on vacation and appreciated the kingdom’s scenery and friendly people.
“I had a great experience here and I hope to come back whenever I am in the country. It was a smooth course, green and beautiful and the people are quite welcoming,” she said.
Meanwhile, yesterday’s 104th Mbabane parkrun hosted 98 walkers and runners .

This run is open to all members of the public and is free of charge. The weekly run is not all about winning but to improve health and wellness through physical exercise. Most athletes use it as their training routine and compete not against each other but time. The 5km timed run commences at Mbabane Club every Saturday at 8am. Most runners clock in within 30 minutes and walkers an hour.

Parkrunner and volunteer Sebbie Du Pont introduced time reflector bibs ranging between 30-minute and one hour. The volunteer wearing a bib became a leader of the pack with that particular targeted time and motivated them to complete the run within that time. Regular parkrunner Kwanele Motsa opted for the 25-minute bib and clocked in 22:06 minutes. Frankie Williams wore a 30-minute bib and completed the run in 29:37 minutes.
