MBABANE – The 2018/19 season is one Manzini Wanderers would like to quickly forget.

With six matches to spare, Wanderers have already suffered about a dozen defeats (11). This is the highest number of losses they’ve suffered in one season in the MTN League era. The giant communications company, MTN Eswatini, started sponsoring the league in the 2002/2003 season and Wanderers were champions.

After Wednesday’s 0-2 loss to table toppers Royal Leopard, Wanderers became the team with the second highest number of defeats this season behind Matsapha who are on 12.  This means the Thabo ‘Koki’ Vilakati-led ensemble have lost about half of the total games in the league. A total of 13 matches are played in each round.

defeats

In the past eight seasons, their highest number of defeats in a whole season (22 games), was 10 and it was in 2009/10 when Young Buffaloes were champions.
In the current 2018/19 campaign, they have 21 points in 20 games, which is an average of 0.95 points per game.

They will not match their 42 points tally for the past season when they finished fourth. If they do the unthinkable this season and win all their remaining games, they can finish on 39 points. As it stands, even a top five finish is a distant dream, as they are 16 points behind fifth-placed Mbabane Swallows.

Meanwhile, in reaction to the recent result, Vilakati had blamed it on poor finishing, but expressed hope that the about three-week league break would be a blessing in disguise for his side as they would work on the grey areas. Skipper Lwazi ‘Shana’ Maziya had also rued missed chances.

reprieve

There is no reprieve for Wanderers. In their last six matches, they are still to play tough and tricky opponents like Green Mamba, Mbabane Highlanders and Matsapha United, among others. The other three teams standing in their way are Tambuti, Vovovo and Malanti Chiefs.
