MANZINI – About 128 artists turned up for the Swaziland Taekwondo Association’s (STA) grading session at Zakhele Hall on Saturday.

Artists descended from all over the country for their first grading session in over three months. President of the STA Zakhele Dlamini said he was not impressed with the turnout as they had given clubs adequate time to prepare. He said the grading had been postponed for a number of weeks to enable clubs to prepare but the turnout was not impressive at all. ‘‘We expected to have a larger number of artists come to the grading. We do not know what happened but we suspect it had to do with the ongoing School Ball Games. We do not know when the next grading shall be, but hopefully those who missed out will get a chance in the next session,” he said.

Belts graded over the weekend included white, yellow, green, blue, red and red to black. Besides the poor attendance, which, however, had improved by the end of the day, Dlamini noted that the event progressed smoothly. ‘‘Practise is essential in our sport. The artists are aware of that. Improvement is only as far as how one is committed to do better,” he said. STA’s Secretary Ndo Sibandze said all the juniors who registered for the session were examined in four aspects of Taekwondo, namely; Basics, Proomsae, Self Defence, and Kyorugi (Sparring).

“From the 128 registered, 72 were graded from White Belt to 2nd Yellow Belt. 36 were graded from Yellow to Green,” Sibandze said. He added that 12 other juniors were graded from Green to Blue Belt, while five (5) graded from Blue to 3rd Red. Two others graduated from 3rd Red to 2nd Red, and one artist graded from 2nd Red to 1st Red.
