MAFUTSENI – Fast improving youngster, Sifiso Mhlanga, has clocked an improved 01:59:46 hours to defend his Newcom Wheels Mountain Bike (MTB) 50km championship in style.

Dinedor Farm outside Mafutseni several kilometres from Manzini was a hive of activity as the battle for supremacy on the bushy, watery and sandy trails took centre stage yesterday.
Despite a photo finish with fellow Swazi Frontier teammate, Sihawu Dlamini, the 18-year old beat his previous time of 02:10:37 hours to win the second edition of the event. The former reached the finish line in 01:59:47 hours.
The champion conceded that he had to be at his best to outwit his competitors, who include the seasoned Fana Mentani who was third in 01:59:49 hours. The race consisted of two 25km laps.

“It was a tough race but adding more energy on the first lap did the trick.
“I watched my opponents throughout and capitalised on their weaknesses.”

Sihawu, on the other hand, said the winner proved a hard nut to crack as he was elusive in sprints.
The winner capped a brilliant season which saw him winning the celebrated Logico Swazi Frontier, Ezulwini MTB Classic and Nkonyeni G2G race, among others.

Meanwhile, Mentani was full of praise for event Coordinator, Mbusi Motsa, for making it possible for him to feature in the inaugural race by paying his registration fees and borrowing him a bicycle.

The event was coupled with a 25km race won by 14-year old Muzi Shabangu  in 01:02:12 hours. There was also a 10km race which saw Bandile Banda becoming a cut above the rest. He finished in 26:37 minutes. About 100 cyclists were part of the festivities.
