MBABANE – In an inexplicable incident, a man of Ekutsimleni requested his mother to assist him in reading the Bible and allegedly stabbed her with a spear in the shoulder.

Ester Sigubudvu Motsa (60) survived the incident and her son, Simanga Motsa, was arrested and charged with attempted murder. The charge sheet states that Simanga intended to kill his mother when he stabbed her with the spear in the right shoulder. On the day of the incident, according to Ester, Simanga approached her in the evening at around 5pm and requested her to assist him to read the Bible. While preparing to read the Bible, she said Simanga drew a spear and stabbed her in the right shoulder.

Ester is said to have fallen after being stabbed and the spear remained lodged in her shoulder. She attempted to remove it but her son, she stated, allegedly pressed it further into her. Ester said she thought Simanga wanted to finish her off and she called for help. “Yebantfwabami, sewungibulele Simanga (my children, Simanga is killing me),” she shouted. Ester said her other son, Gcina, came to her rescue and tried to disarm Simanga.  They fought over the spear and Gcina called Sambulo Motsa, who arrived and they were able to disarm Simanga of the spear. Gcina is expected to inform the court that the accused person is his brother. He will state that on the day of the incident, he heard his mother shouting for help in her house and quickly responded.

When he arrived, according to Gcina, he found Simanga holding the spear. Their mother had a stab wound in the right shoulder and Gcina said he called Sambulo, with whom they were successful in disarming the accused person of the weapon. Simanga allegedly ran away after being disarmed and their mother was rushed to Dvokolwako Health Centre. Ester is said to have called one of her church members, Lucky Lokotfwako, and informed him that on the fateful day, her son had stabbed her with a spear. Lokotfwako and his wife are said to have proceeded to Ester’s homestead and when they arrived, they were informed that she had been rushed to hospital. He said he questioned Simanga on why he had stabbed his mother and he could not give a satisfactory response. “He grabbed the accused and arrested him and took him to Mliba Police Station,” reads Simanga’s indictment.

The investigating officer, Detective Constable Mfanzile Dlamini of Mliba Police Station, is one of the witnesses in the matter. He recorded a statement from Ester and the hospital. He said he found Ester in a critical condition at the health centre. Another witness in the matter is a medical practitioner, Dr Kibwe Wa Kibwe, who was based at the health centre. In total, the Crown has lined up six witnesses to prove its case against the accused person. The matter is pending in court.
