MANZINI – Police officers were again a target of unknown gunmen last night as seven bullets were reportedly fired into a house in their camp at Zakhele.

The police camp, which is in close proximity to the National Psychiatric Referral Hospital, had one of the houses hailed with about seven bullets. According to impeccable sources, the gunmen were targeting the occupants of the house as they shot through the door. It was said some of the bullets were lodged in a refrigerator within the house. Impeccable sources said the incident happened at about 7pm. They shared suspicions that the gunmen could have walked into the camp as it was also adjacent to the Zakhele Sports Ground.  At the time of compiling this report, at 8pm yesterday, it was reported that there was no casualty of the shooting.

Confirmed

Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Superintendent Phindile Vilakati confirmed that there was a shooting incident at Zakhele Police Camp. However, she asked not to comment further at that time. It is a known fact that members of the State security agents have been targeted and killed by unknown gunmen with the recent incident being the shooting of Bonginkosi Dlamini, 46. He was shot dead just after 6am while walking along Mathangeni, Matsapha, to the Police Academy, which is two kilometers away from where he was killed.

On the eve of Dlamini’s shooting, a member of the Umbutfo Eswatini Defence Force (UEDF), was also shot while driving along the same stretch of road. He survived the shooting. Leading to that was the killing of Sibusiso Matsebula who was shot about 500 metres away from his duty station - Matsapha Police Station – by a daring gunman at Sigodvweni, which is along the Ndlunganye - Police Accademy Public Road. This was after a female officer, Zinhle Mavuso from northern Hhohho, was shot dead while her colleague was shot in the chest. This incident happened in the wee hours on the outskirts of the Manzini Central Business District (CBD), on a Saturday.
