LOBAMBA – Members of Parliament (MPs) have directed the Minister of Home Affairs,   Princess Lindiwe, to deal with the issue of promoting employees who are unqualified.

The members of the august House were of the assertion that the ministry had caused a blunder by promoting officers who had grades as lower as Grade VII, and this even affected the operations in some offices of the ministry. This was during the ministry’s portfolio committee debate for the first quarter performance report of 2022/23. Shiselweni MP Nokuthula Dlamini asked what the ministry was doing to push the Ministry of Public Service to approve the skills of service.

She said to minimise ill-treatment among employees, these would provide terms of reference, which would detail the job description, as well as when and how promotions should be granted. The MP highlighted that in other ministries, it was clear when promotions were given and under which criteria. She mentioned that employees were not found fighting for positions without fitting specific requirements. The MP emphasised that an instrument should be provided and effected to deal with the matter.

Kumethula MP Derrick Masuku added that he learnt of the saddening news which was published on May 22, that there was infighting at the ministry, which resulted in operations being halted during the registration process. “When people are promoted, there are certain laws put in place to allow for promotions. However, it has been reported that there are officers who were promoted with Standard Five (Grade VII),” he quipped. Masuku further mentioned that the work was not properly done because of what happened in the ministry. He also alleged that it was said there were two employees who were promoted yet were not included in the system and they had Accounting qualifications.
