MLIBA – Three police officers were supposedly part of a mob that attacked a man at Mliba Police Station and later burnt his homestead.

According to impeccable sources, last week Tuesday, residents of Mliba inclusive of the three police officers, allegedly formed a mob and attacked *Musa following an allegation that he had a hand in the death of a taxi man. The taxi man, Glen Dlamini, who was operating at Mliba Village, was allegedly hired by a young man on August 28, 2021 while at his workstation. The source claimed that along the way, which was to an unknown destination, the ‘client’ supposedly informed the deceased to pick up two of his friends. When the said friends boarded the car, said to be a Toyota RunX, Dlamini realised that he knew one of them. The person he knew, it was reported, was someone whom they had a quarrel with, leading to seeking remedy to their quarrel through the courts. Dlamini was stabbed and later shot before being set alight inside his car in a forest at Njojane, under Hlane Constituency in the Lubombo Region.

Subsequent to this, it was said the police arrested two teenagers, aged 17 and 19 years old. According to impeccable sources, one of the suspects was Musa’s child and the community members alleged that he had a hand in the demise of Dlamini. Following these alleagations, it was gathered that the three police officers and the other residents converged at Musa’s homestead and were supposedly violent. Seeing what was happening, it was gathered that one of the neighbours contacted the Mliba Police Station, which resulted in police arriving at the scene. It was gathered that a senior police officer was able to temporarily calm the situation and later transported Musa from a secluded location to the police station in order to protect him.

Disappeared

Impeccable sources claimed that after the mob had noticed that Musa had disappeared, they purportedly informed his family members that they should contact him and relay that if he did not vacate the area by abandoning his homestead, it would be burnt to the ground.  On the other hand, the disappearance of Musa was said to have not yielded any positive result as it drew the ire of the mob and led to them walking to the police station, which is about six kilometres from Musa’s homestead. Upon arrival at the police station, it was said the mob, inclusive of the three police officers, demanded to see Musa. Again, it was said the senior police officer, after evaluating the situation on the ground, permitted five people to engage Musa inside the police station. It was claimed that the five residents, who included the three police officers, were frisked before being let into the police station to engage Musa.

During the engagement, according to impeccable sources, the residents informed Musa to vacate his homestead with his family as they were no longer happy with his stay. Thereafter, it was later claimed that the residents left the police station and two hours later, the police released Musa as he had not been charged.  “He was released with the assumption that he was safe and there was nowhere he could be kept as he had not been arrested,” said a source. However, while en route to his residence, Musa was said to have been attacked by the residents again. This time, it was said they beat him up and he fled again to the police station. Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Superintendent Phindile Vilakati confirmed that an enquiry was opened following the attack on the resident. Vilakati said they had also received allegations that among the mob were police officers. She said they were still investigating.
