MBABANE – A man who was supposedly found by his neighbours with sliced and decomposing human remains at Mantabeni on Monday is assisting police with investigations.

The remains were discovered by his neighbour’s daughters, who then informed their mother. The children are believed to have been drawn by a foul smell emanating from their neighbour’s house and went to investigate. That is when they discovered the human body covered in corrugated iron sheets inside the one-room flat belonging to their neighbour.

Flies

According to the mother of the young girls, Nomsa Dlamini, the children told her that they had seen a human being lying down with flies around his body. She stated that she then rushed to the neighbour’s house, and to her surprise, she saw a decomposing body with the intestines placed next to it. The mother said the body had a missing leg and seemed as though certain  parts of the flesh were sliced. “As I was still shocked by what I was seeing, the suspect came and forced me to leave his house and I did so,” she narrated in an interview. Dlamini said she then called a member of the local community police forum to inform him about the incident. When she and the community police members came back, they found that the suspect had left, with the remains placed in a plastic bag. With help from the community police and some community members, the man was later found the following day.

Dlamini said that the incident traumatised her daughters so much that they were unable to eat anything since seeing the body. She requested that the police and public help her and the children by offering counselling. Community police member Themba Dlamini said the suspect allegedly confessed that the body belonged to his brother, but denied being the one who killed him. The suspect’s brother was last seen in the area about two weeks ago. The suspect is said to have informed them that his brother committed suicide last Saturday, but he could not tell anyone about it. “We then called the police to come and witness what had happened. They came and took him and the remains which were in the plastic bag,” he said. Themba said it was not the suspect’s first brush with the law as in 2018, he was arrested alongside two other men for alleged rape and was released because of an alleged mental illness. Yesterday, police officers visited the scene again, possibly to collect more evidence.

Flies

This journalist was not allowed to come close to the scene as police were yet to conclude their investigations. Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Superintendent Phindile Vilakati confirmed that the suspect was in police custody. She stated that the police were still investigating the matter and could not yet confirm if the suspect was behind the alleged killing. Vilakati said she also could not confirm if the remains belonged to the brother of the accused. “We are still investigating on what really happened and if the body really belonged to the accused’s brother. All I can confirm for now is that he is in police custody and will be here until we have answers.” she said. Vilakati then thanked the community for informing the police and not taking matters into their own hands. She encouraged the community to trust the police by informing them on such cases in order for them to be assisted accordingly.
