MBABANE – The Kingdom of Eswatini can heave a sigh of relief as the Global Fund has assured that it will continue to assist in terms of funding.

The assurance for funding of the country’s fight against HIV/AIDS and TB comes a few months after it was reported that it was coming to an end in 2021. The Global Fund country team is in the country to do a follow-up on the funding that Eswatini has been receiving towards the fight against HIV, TB and malaria. Global Fund Country Team Leader Boniface Njenga assured Prime Minister Ambrose Mandvulo Dlamini that Eswatini would get a fair share from the over US$14 billion (E206 902 500 000), which was raised in the Replenishment Summit held in France last month. Njenga said Eswatini had achieved its co-financing commitment in the fight against the three aforementioned diseases and the organisation was looking forward to the same in the next funding.

He further stated that they had already submitted all information to the allocation team but were not privy to the figure that the country stands to get as the allocation was based on a global formula and the allocation process was still underway. “Eswatini has made a huge commitment in the fight against HIV/AIDS and His Majesty the King complemented these efforts by pledging a sum of US$6 million to the Global Fund. We are very grateful to the King and the entire Eswatini nation for the pledge,” he said. Welcoming the team, the PM said Eswatini was highly appreciative of the valuable assistance it continued to receive from the Global Fund hence it pleased His Majesty King Mswati III to pledge US$6million, which is E88 672 800 according to the current rate exchange, on behalf of the Kingdom at the Replenishment Summit.

“As a country, we are grateful for the King’s visionary leadership and his commitment to the health of the nation, which was displayed by a pledge that serves as an investment to the health of all emaswati. The pledge is also a symbol of Eswatini’s solidarity with the global community in the fight against HIV, TB and malaria,” he said. Dlamini mentioned that over the years, Eswatini had received over US$265 million, approximately E3.5 billion, from the Global Fund in support of intervention programmes to strengthen the fight against HIV/AIDS, TB and malaria.
