LOBAMBA – MTN Eswatini has been accused of bugging some people’s cellphones.

This allegation was made by Motshane MP Robert Magongo in the House of Assembly yesterday during the budget debate of the Ministry of Information, Communication and Technology First Quarter Performance Report. MP Magongo alleged that MTN staffers listened on to their conversations and told the Minister Princess Sikhanyiso that there was no privacy when one used the MTN network. “Asina privacy kunayi intfo yaka MTN,” he said in vernacular.

Action

He asked the minister to take serious action on this matter, stating that if the mobile company wanted to continue operating in the country, they should not listen in on people’s conversations. He said he would be forced to move a motion calling for the closure of MTN if they continued with this behaviour. He said MTN had a law on which circumstances they could listen in on people’s conversations and that if they wanted information they should go to the police and the courts to seek on order. “They must not listen to our conversations, what do they want from me?” said Magongo. The minister is expected to submit written responses to the committee before the end of the week.
