PIGG’S PEAK – When robbers entered a shop to steal items and cash, little did they know they would go out fleeing.

A shootout ensued between robbers and Sigayoyo Magongo, the Deputy High Commissioner of Eswatini to Mozambique.
This is said to have happened around Fontotje near Buhleni, at Magongo’s homestead.

The robbers are said to have earlier stolen a Nissan sedan from a soldier’s homestead around Msahweni near Matsamo, which is about 31 kilometres from Magongo’s home.

It is alleged that about five armed men arrived at a homestead where there is also a shop, which is said to be operated by businessmen of Asian origin.
The robbers are said to have been targeting money in the shop as well as cellphones.
It was gathered that they entered through the ceiling of the shop.

At the time, Magongo is also said to have visited his homestead, though he is based at the Eswatini High Commission in Mozambique.
While the robbers were stealing from the shop, Magongo is said to have heard some noises and decided to investigate what was going on.
As he was leaving the house, he was forced to rush back inside due to the sound of gunfire.

The thugs are said to have fired at him without any warning but luckily, none of the bullets hit him.
When Magongo went back to his house, he is said to have also obtained his licensed firearm.

Bullets

An exchange of gunfire ensued thereafter and some of the bullets are said to have hit Magongo’s vehicle.
The thugs eventually fled but no one was shot during the shootout.
They allegedly fled with cellphones as well as over E10 000 in cash.
Though they live near the shop, the Asians did not come out of the house as the gunfire continued.

This publication has also established that the thugs are part of a syndicate which also involves foreign nationals colluding with locals, including an ex-convict.
Police officers were then called from Buhleni Police Post and they arrived within a few minutes but the thugs had already fled the scene.
