MBABANE – The Swaziland National Association of Teachers (SNAT) is indebted to government by over E400 000.
The debt by SNAT to government is said to be money paid to secretary generals of the association.

The publication has learnt that the issue is being talked about in hushed tones as it is yet to be reported to the general council.
According to impeccable sources, the organisation’s leadership came to know of the arrears at the height of the cost-of-the-living-adjustment (CoLA) activities. This is said to have caused a delay in relaying the message to the association’s structures.

Arrears

The sources said the arrears date back to the tenure of Muzi Mhlanga – who is the Deputy Secretary of the Trade Union Congress of Swaziland (TUCOSWA).
It is said Mhlanga, while in office, as the secretary general of SNAT, was remunerated by government despite that he was performing the unions’ activities.
“He was paid his salary and pension. For this, SNAT was supposed to remit the money back to government,” the source said.
However, it is said the trade union remitted his salary and failed to do the same for his pension.

Also, Zwelithini Mndzebele’s tenure is said to have been engulfed with the same challenges whereby the association did not remit to government the money that was paid to him by the taxpayer. It is said these anomalies were discovered when the organisation was reconciling its financial statements.
For the incumbent SNAT Secretary General, Sikelela Dlamini, it is said the organisation has already remitted E32 000 to government.
Dlamini did not want to delve on the merits of the matter save to say that the organisation would deal with it in the appropriate forums.

Actual

Meanwhile, sources within the organisation said the leadership of the organisation was waiting for the actual debt.
The sources said a letter had been sent to the office of the account general requesting to be furnished with the exact amount owed in respect of these monies.
“The NEC is prepared to pay the money. They have already engaged government on how they can pay back,” he said.

On the other hand, Communications Officer in the Ministry of Finance Setsabile Dlamini said her ministry could not have the money owed by SNAT as the agreement was between the organisation and the Ministry of Education and Training.
