HLUTHI – When she arrived at the school she was a female teacher but with time, this changed as she started dressing like a man and wanting to be addressed as Mr and not Miss.

This is the situation pupils of one school in the Shiselweni Region had to contend with where they now have to regard one of their female teachers as a male due to her sexual orientation.

Interviewed pupils confirmed that they now have to address the teacher as Mr and no longer Miss, which was the case before.
While the pupils have come to terms with the teacher’s sexual orientation, the community is having none of it and want her removed.
The name of the school has been deliberately withheld.

Also withheld is the name of the teacher due to the sensitivity of the matter.
Some residents said they were shocked when the teacher became a man and started dressing up like one when going to school yet she would dress up like a lady before.

According to a concerned parent, it was not well received within the community that the teacher was allegedly a member of the lesbians gay bisexual transgender and intersexual (LGBTI) community as they believed it would allegedly affect their children.

The parents said they raised their concerns both at community and school level but nothing was done about it. They claimed to have also engaged the Regional Education Officer but the issue was never addressed.

The parents demand that the only solution would be for the teacher to be transferred.
Nsingizini Bucopho Selby Gumbi confirmed that some community members were worried about the teacher’s sexual orientation. “We discussed this at length and even approached the school committee over it but it turned out that the committee could not do anything about it.”
