NGWENYA – Over 10 police officers and SRAWU leadership clashed regarding designated areas of protest.
SRAWU is the Swaziland Revenue Authority Workers’ Union.

The ‘on strike’ Swaziland Revenue Authority (SRA) workers had moved from their designated areas of protest to block the access road for outgoing trucks at the Ngwenya Border Gate yesterday. This is the same move that the striking employees recently applied, blocking the trucks while police watched.

During the first day of the strike last week Wednesday, at least eight trucks destined for South Africa were blocked by the striking SRA employees, who demanded the drivers to blow the horn before gaining access to the road.  The outgoing trucks were blocked for a few minutes before they could be allowed into the parking bay.

SRAWU Secretary General Moses Masilela addressed the employees, stating that they would not be intimidated as they were picketing at their workplace. This seems to have angered the police officers, who threatened to use force if the union and its members continued to block the road.

The police immediately roped in the SRA Head of Security at the Ngwenya Border to try and reason with the union and its membership.
However, this made the situation worse as the union leadership did not want to hear anything and argued that police officers were taking sides.

Masilela and his leadership moved aside where they communicated with the police. Thereafter, they finally heed to the demands of the police.
