AMERICAN FUGITIVE ARRESTED IN SWAZILAND FOR DRUGS

MBABANE – A fugitive, wanted in the United States of America, handed himself over to the American Embassy in Ezulwini on Wednesday where he was subsequently arrested by Lobamba Police.     

 
David Anson Alandt, who calls himself Shakes Piper McGee is wanted for drug related offences and contempt of court.
Alandt is said to have arrived at the Embassy to enquire why he was being followed. When his details where cross checked at the American Embassy, they discovered that he was a wanted suspect and the Royal Swaziland Police were called to capture him.


Officers from Lobamba arrested him and he was kept at the police station over night while he awaits his extradition to America. When he was questioned, he informed the Swazi police that he had relatives in the country and the passport he was in possession of reflected that he was in the country legally.


Yesterday, police from Lobamba took him to the Mbabane Magistrates Court where an application was made for his extradition to South Africa.
Alandt was charged on December 10, 2014 in the US for possession of marijuana with intent to deliver.
He is wanted to stand trial before the Circuit Court of Saline County Arkansas. He was arrested following the discovery of 218kg of dagga, which has a street value of E174 400, in Swaziland.


This offence is a felony with a maximum penalty of 30 years imprisonment in the United States.  On August 8, 2015, the court ordered that a jury trial commence on September 24, 2015 and Alandt and his attorney were informed of the trial date. Alandt failed to appear for this trial, and on the same day, the court ordered the issuance of a warrant for his arrest, which remains valid and executable.
