LACK OF GOVT OPPOSITION IN PARLY

Sir,

Oftentimes, it is the prevailing political situation that acts as a foundation for a thriving economy and respect for fundamental human rights and freedoms.  In this country, we are still polarised on whether our political system is ideal for the country, or whether it conforms to the internationally set standards for a democratic system.

Develop

On one pole are the progressives who are of the firm view that the Tikhundla System is undemocratic and has no capacity to holistically develop the nation as it serves the interests of those in the echelons of power, and, hence it must be dismantled in favour of multiparty democracy, while on the opposite far corner lies the so- called conservatives who vehemently believe that the Tikhundla governance is a God-given system which is democratic and unique, which must be, therefore safeguarded and sustained. During election times, we are the only country in Southern Africa, with citizens thinking which individual to vote for but also having others mobilising to boycott the election.

Differences

This emanates from our differences regarding the system of governance in the country. The result of these antagonistic views regarding the political system used in the country has had rippling effects on the economy and human rights record of the country. Government is literally running without an opposition inside parliamentary chambers.

Conduct

The at times manifesting differences between the individuals making the Parliament and government cannot be qualified into opposition because they are primarily based on personal interests for the concerned and have nothing to do with government policy or conduct. The lack of opposition of an incumbent government is corrosive to any attempts by the same government to foster development of any kind to its people, unless if it seeks to benefit the leaders directly or indirectly.
